Beach Hazard Statement
Issued: 5:40 PM PST Jan. 19, 2019 – National Weather Service

... Beach hazards statement now in effect through Monday afternoon...

* hazards... elevated surf of 4 to 6 feet and strong rip currents
are expected through Sunday on exposed west-facing beaches,
subsiding to 3 to 5 feet with sets to 6 feet on Monday. The
combination of elevated surf and high astronomical tides around
mid-morning Sunday and Monday may result in minor tidal overflow
in low lying areas.

* Impacts... there is an increased risk for ocean drowning. Rip
currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea. Large
breaking waves can cause injury... wash people off beaches and
rocks... and capsize small boats near shore.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A beach hazards statement is issued when threats such as rip
currents... longshore currents... sneaker waves and other hazards
create life-threatening conditions in the surf zone. Swim near a
lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don't
swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following
the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or
wave for help.
