Watches & Warnings

High Surf Warning, Coastal Flood Advisory
Issued: 1:53 AM PST Dec. 18, 2018 – National Weather Service

... High surf warning remains in effect until 9 am PST this
morning...
... Coastal flood advisory remains in effect until 9 am PST this
morning...

* surf... surf 16 to 22 feet with local sets up to 25 feet can be
expected through early this morning. The surf is expected to
subside below 20 feet by mid morning. The highest surf will be
on west to northwest facing beaches.

* Coastal flooding... minor coastal flooding of low-lying areas
will be likely during high tide this morning when peak tides
around 5.5 feet are expected near 630 am. Water could spill
into normally dry beaches, beach parking lots and Harbor
walkways.

* Impacts... there is a significant threat of frequent, very
strong rip currents and powerful breaking waves that can
suddenly overtop rocks or jetties. Sneaker waves may suddenly
wash over previously dry sand or rocks, sweeping you into the
water. There is a threat of significant beach erosion and
possible damage to piers and coastal structures. The very large
surf and strong rip currents will bring extremely dangerous,
potentially life- threatening conditions to unexperienced
swimmers and surfers, with waves battering rocks and jetties. In
addition, large breaking waves can be expected across the Morro
Bay Harbor entrance, with the potential of capsizing small
boats.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A high surf warning indicates that dangerous... battering waves
are expected to pound the shoreline, bringing potentially
damaging and life- threatening conditions. It is advised that
people remain away from the shoreline from Sunday night through
Tuesday, especially staying off rocks and jetties. If caught in a
rip current, relax and float. Don't swim against the current. If
able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to
escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.

A coastal flood advisory indicates that onshore winds and tides
will combine to generate flooding of low areas along the shore.
