Arrivederci - goodbye until we meet again:)

By: sandiquiz , 1:28 PM GMT on March 05, 2017

We seem to be grinding to a halt. WU has become almost like a ghost town.

Never Mind - I intend to hang in here until the very end! Then I will let off several fireworks and toast everyone's health with a glass of amber nectar, whilst singing Auld Lang Syne!

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne.

Chorus:

For auld lang syne, my jo,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne,

We two have run about the hills
And pulled the daisies fine;
But we've wandered manys the weary foot
Since long, long ago.

Chorus:

For auld lang syne, my jo,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne,

And there's a hand, my trusty friend!
And give us a hand of yours!
And we'll take a deep draught of good-will
For long, long ago.

Chorus

For auld lang syne, my jo,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne,

With thanks to Robbie Burns for the use of three of his verses!

I have just spent a couple of hours going through my blog archive, copying several blogs I wanted to keep into a word document and then deleting them from Wunderground.

I have made it up to the end of 2014, so only two years, of the 12 I have belonged, left to check over and delete.

The sad thing here, is that all the blogs I have deleted, have removed all the comments left for me, too.

Several years ago Linda (Shoreacres) introduced me to Etheree poetry. It is a style of putting words together I find relaxing, so here is an offering I put together this morning.

Gone
Our blogs,
Our photos,
The friends we knew.
No more researching
For the perfect photo,
The suitable quotation,
Or the applicable data.
We have laughed, worried and shared our news.
Now all we have left are our memories.

For the last time I will re-post my weather stickers, maps and blog counters.

Thanks to the quarter of a million viewers, from more than 2000 places world wide, that have visited my blog.

It was fun, I learnt a lot, and I made many dear friends, several whom I have met in person, but it is time to move on.

The WU Survivor group on Flickr will never be WUnderground, it doesn't have the ability to write blogs, but it will provide a safe haven to met up and leave comments for others to see.

For the last time - pour yourself a coffee and chat away...until we can't.

Darn politics, etc. So sorry about the events of yesterday in England. My sympathies for the victims and their families. Thinking of you and the people of England.

Sandi, I intently watched the awful news from London. My sympathies! And so many countries affected as the crowd using Westminster Bridge was very international.

Nice idea to throw a party towards the end of the old WU. I'll sure be joining!
Greetings from Germany which just enters a stretch of nice spring weather.

Hi Sandi! ~ So sorry to here of the deadly and serious outcome to that London attack the other day! Glad to learn that "C" only "used to" use the bridge to work and supposedly doesn't anymore? Nevertheless, it's horrible when people across our globe now never know what tragedy might befall a certain city or country next. Such a wild crazy hornets nest of hate and mistrust have evolved over the past decade or so!

I, too, had read WU's FAQ page about how they were allegedly to be saving one's years of blogheaders but not posts. The remaining accessibility issue is quite confusing as they eluded to all being archived after the transition to Drupal is complete. I don't think a current bookmarking of special ones will help and it's seriously doubtful any so-called knowledgeable source at WU would respond or be helpful in pointing one in the right direction. What a debacle! I think I've saved all my important blog stuff either onto MS Word or onto Tiny-pic or Photobucket. I never used WU's photo upload service as it seemed too finicky accepting animated pics, etc. I guess I had some foresight there!

Nevertheless, I will definitely be joining everyone here, April 1st, around 2:00 pm EST, my U.S. time ,and 8:00 pm, your U.K. time. Boy, I'm so proud that I don't need to reach for a calculator or check the world's time zones to figure this all out. LOL! I will definitely be checking back in here between now and then.

Happiness and Peace to you, yours and the U.K from the U.S.!

The news this morning is that five are now dead and over 40 are injured.... if could have been so much worse.
The bridge where the attack happened is the one C used to walk over twice a day to get to his office.

OK - it seems that the party will be held here - in the coffee house!! I promise to serve fruit punch and fruit cordial ! (An in-joke with Briar! lol)

I spent an hour going through 2015 yesterday - only 2016 to read and save.

In searching through the FAQ page I found this ..

Q: Can I still view previous blog posts and comments?
A: Yes! All WunderBlog posts published prior to April 3 will be viewable; however, blog comments will not be displayed.

So it seems our blogs will still be available - but how you get to them I am not sure - but no comments.

A grey day here - but I have things to do so off I go!!

Just checked my world clock on my iPad. If you start at 8pm your time, that's 1pm my time. I'll try to stop in and see as many as I can. I don't have anything on the calendar now, but no guarantees that will remain. I haven't had much luck making too many visits to the other sites created as well. Once I spend my time browsing around FB, I'm pretty much done!

Mass - A car ploughed into folk on the pavement outside Parliament - on Westminster Bridge - and killed two and left another 12 with serious injuries. The same man - we think - then drove his car into Parliament gates and stabbed a policeman who tried to stop him running away before he was shot by another policeman The Parliament lock-down has been lifted and all are now out and on their way home. The bridge is still closed whilst they sort out the mess. It could be a terrorist attack - they are calling it that - or it could be just be a mad man with a grudge - who knows!!

Edit - now four dead and 20 in hospital - 10 serious.

The End of WU party will begin at 8pm my time and keep going until Poppy, Karen, Linda, WTS and then Mike In Hawaii go to bed! As WTS says... we could do with a SAME time ZONE! lol

Hi Sandi! ~ It's just been reported by the current US news websites/ TV stations that "the UK Parliament is in total lockdown due to "shots being fired outside of and at Parliament" by an attacker who was later shot by a nearby police officer. Several people are reported injured. There was also a knife-wielding man seen there as well but not sure if it was the same culprit or someone else. A policeman was also reported as being stabbed. Naturally, this is being considered "a terrorist act". Hope all the injured bystanders will soon recover and this horrible situation soon resolved! I'm questioning whether or not this might also have been coincidentally politically motivated by the upcoming "Brexit" decision of next week? Who knows anymore? Boy, what a crazy world we live in these days!

On a lighter note, do count me in for the WU Blogxit party on the weekend of April Fools Day or the first! Just post a note on my WU blog site, when able, or I'll check back in here daily so to get the suitable time arranged for all participants. I fully realize that your UK time is 6 hours ahead of us here in Mass.., so those of us in the U.S, will need to defer to that time differential.

Party on Saturday, I'll have to keep an eye out for the time(s). That one big time zone would sure help out, will have to get Mr T on it - I hear he has the best time zone LOL

YCD, Yep that works....it's what I always had my students to do or my children when a nose bleed. Guess I must have learned that in first aid class. Who knows, but it works. Of course, for a severe nosebleed some follow-up needed.

Also wanted to mention, that applying (believe it or not) a frozen bags of peas to the site also helps the bleed to clot or congeal. This was recommended to my husband and self by our doctor, a few years back, when my hubby was experiencing horrendous nose bleeds.. Eventually, he had the affected nostril/site cauterized, by an experienced ear, nose and throat specialist, and hasn't had one since! Nevertheless, this method proved to work quite well in the interim.

WTS - we live in skunk zone too! My little chihuahua (may she RIP) was skunked twice. You'd think she would have learned the first time! Bug - we also have opossums, coyotes, squirrels, birds, LOL - just like everyone else. Everything is so urban now.

Well, the boys had a grand celebration. This is a picture of them on their birthday morning. My daughter has been taking one every morning since they were 2 or 3 I believe. They are getting so tall, and it's getting hard to get hugs and kisses out of them. At least Hudson is very willing to provide us with hugs and kisses. My youngest will be on maternity leave in three short weeks, and the baby will be delivered about a month later, May 13th I believe. I guess this grandchild won't make the blogs of WU!

Ian and Evan (Ian, on the right, looks taller than Evan in this photo, but he is not. It's funny because he was the bigger of the two until they hit about 9, then Evan caught up and surpassed him.

And here's Hudson wishing everyone a happy St. Patrick's Day

Good morning to all, it's a beautiful. blue sky morning here.

Bug Thanks for flying through! LOL

Mass I have to agree with you. Will it be one minute past midnight on the third, or 11:59 PM on the third%u2026 So having a party, on the first, Saturday night, seems like the most sensible thing to do.

Thanks for the spring equinox greetings. It feels like spring here today.

WTS A single worldwide time zone, which we could access for parties, sounds like a good idea. Perhaps we could get Trump to tweet about it! LOL

Talking about utility bills I had an email from my provider today saying I had used less energy this winter, so they're dropping my monthly bill by 15 pound a month. Better in my pocket then theirs!

Shirley Thanks for the photo of the waxwing, they come to us in the winter%u2026 And obviously to you in the spring :-)

Ycd Thanks for the tip, next time I have a nosebleed, if I ever have another, I remember that. What I actually did, was to fetch an ice pack from the freezer and put it down my back. I remember the old wives tale about a cold key down the back.

~~~~~~~~~~
I am out for the day with my friend, ( my old Thursday-lunchtime -garden-centre -friend), who moved into the next county. I'm due there at 10:30, and it'll take me about an hour and 15 minutes to get there, so I better get a move on.
Everybody have a happy, sunny day.
NoseBleed!
I had that happen just before the retina detached. SIL#! (G.P.) advised:
Pinch your nose up there by the cartilage part and hold it for about 5 minutes. If the bleeding does not stop pinch and hold for 10 minutes. Repeat as necessary.
WTS, Pepé Le Pew lives in your neighborhood?
Would you believe I'd never seen a skunk until, oh what? One of the last times I went up to see Dad, before he passed? Or was it one of the trips up to meet family for lunch in O'burg? Whatever. It was just a a few years ago. They don't seem to be too common in suburbia.
What we do have, though I've never seen a live one, is Hoover hogs. I'd been spotting road kills for some years now, one of which was just a few blocks from my house.
"And my midnight is before yours and yours is before Poppy's and WTS and Ycd! lol " I think, for special occasions, there should be a single worldwide time zone so we could all be in sync. I'm sure it wouldn't cause any problems ;-) LOL
We are often trying to beat the utility bill by managing the heat flow from outside to in at our house. The only drawback is the extra dust in the house (problem of being in a dry zone), oh, and maybe when a skunk has been required to fire off its defenses outside of a window! Good thing that doesn't happen too often LOL
Still here. Well if we have a blog party would it be on the 3rd until Mid night?
Hi Sandi and G/G! ~ I think it would be great to have a WU blog party send off on the weekend of April Fools Day! With that being said, though, I think it would be safest to have it either on Sat.,April 1st or Sunday, April 2nd at the very latest. Something tells me that at the stroke of midnight, Sun., Apr. 2nd into Mon, the 3rd, all our individual blogs will either be going into some secretive archive or just plain poof! There's no telling what the IBM itinerary or scheduling office will be like with those remaining WU techs behind the helm.
If we can make this happen, do count me in! We could really have some fun, like in the earlier golden days, and send WU off packing with perhaps some bittersweet laughs? Let me know what you gals decide. I'm remaining here on WU till the very end, as well as, Flickr, Disqus (which recently seems all too quiet) and naturally, Rob's new Ark2!
Oh Patti - that is not good. I am glad you are feeling a little better.
As to the nose bleed... I had my first ever two weeks ago. I think I had dried out my nasal passages scrapping old paint off a ceiling. I looked like a snowman so probably had paint dust in my nose, too. The next morning it bled! A friend told me to rub the inside of my nose with Vaseline for a few days to moisturise the nose lining.
Karen I remember the photo of your daughter standing at the bottom of the stairs showing off her huge bump! Time does fly! It is ten years this year since I retired! Happy birthday to the twins:)
WTS - cold is all relative! LOL The house is so well insulated that when it is warm outside the gas heating does cut in. Saturday had been a decent day - sun shining and getting up to 61 degrees. By 8pm the heating still hadn't cut in...the temp inside the house still above the 68 that I have it set at. I could have advanced the temperature, but thought it was easier to head to bed! lol
Ylee.... hi back at yer!
Mass -
thank you:) Great changes and very apt!
Hi Sandi! ~ In response to your post on my site, my foot's doing better, at least, to where I can comfortably walk on it without "Das Boot" and I have an appt. to see the podiatrist for a follow-up visit in less than two weeks
Yes, I'm thrilled to have been born at a time (early 50's) to where I could receive nearly maximum SS benefits. I really feel for those born much later, like Ylee, who may have to literally work till nearly the grave. The horrific healthcare debacle unfortunately lives on in the U.S. and I'm afraid it's going to get a whole lot worse before better.
On the lighter side, I found this old tune by Joni Mitchell (and added a few parodied lyrics of my own to be fitting). It seemed to perfectly mimic both our current lot in life here on WU and sometimes with life in general. Hope it provides a chuckle or two!
Big Yellow Taxi
Joni Mitchell,
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
(With a smaller website, one blog
...a dwindling) hot spot!
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
'Till it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
They took all the (BLOGS)
And put them in a (BLOG MUSEUM)
And they'll charge all the people
(Quite some dollars) just to see 'em
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
'Till it's gone
They paved paradise
And they put up a parking lot
Hey (blogger, blogger)
Put away that D.D.T. now
(We've got new sites on Flickr, Disqus,
the New Ark, please go see them)
Please!!!!!
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
'Till it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
Late last night
I heard the screen door slam
And a big (corporate giant)
Took away my (WU fans)
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
'Till it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
'Till it's gone
They paved paradise
Put up a parking lot
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
They paved paradise
Put up a parking lot
Quoting 62. RobDaHood:
Just wanted to take a moment to say how much I have enjoyed your blog here over the years Sandi.
And thank you for what you have done in creating the Flickr group and helping people here stay in touch.
Thanks for that Rob - I do know I had hundreds check my blog some days, especially when I did the "Armchair UK" blogs back in 2007/08 and whenever I did an "educational" blog. Looking at my mapaloco maps, I have had folk visit from every corner of the world. The second map has only been in use for 18 months, and still there have been 633 places that have visited. (The first map stopped working, but I chose to leave it in place. )
I am glad I have entertained and maybe 'taught' a few people... and don't forget ... I serve the best coffee on WUnderground!! lol
Shirley - Happy St Patrick's Day to you - belated. I had a visitor yesterday who stayed until 10pm, so I was off to bed when she left, and never had time to come back to WU.
Poppy - Originally we had six goldfish then someone gave us two shubunkin. They slowly built up until we had 35! The Heron visited and ate all but two! They lived happily for a couple of years then they disappeared!
So for 18 months we left it as a wildlife pond - the newts, frogs and birds all used it, even the squirrel came down for a drink.
Then about two years ago we decided to purchase two goldfish and two shubunkins. All went well until one goldfish disappeared.... So I came up with an idea of covering a part of the pond with a green plastic mesh. The fish soon realised they were safe under there! It was then I realised I had a black goldfish in there! It must have been an little one at the time of the heron attack, and survived all on its own for 18 months! Now her has friends to swim with again!
So sorry about your thumb!!! And you lost your fish to the heron?? My son has a Great Blue that hangs out by his ponds all the time. But he does not stock his ponds with koi or fancy goldfish. He had ducklings last year that were marching up and down his driveway with mom. I think my DIL was a bit concerned that when we were there that TNT would get the babies. But they aren't into swimming to get anything:)))
Just wanted to take a moment to say how much I have enjoyed your blog here over the years Sandi.
And thank you for what you have done in creating the Flickr group and helping people here stay in touch.
Talking to myself again... I must stop it, they will lock me up!!
Never mind - there are folk to chat to on Flickr and also now on Rob's The Ark.
The thumb is playing up today... It is my space bar thumb as well as the one I use on the mouse! Time to get off the computer (been on an hour already checking this and that) and do something else !
In fact I will consult Cat 6 as long as it is available and use WU weather information daily.
I agree - I will still check in especially during severe weather.
I think they did give two years for the price of one last year. I got two for one, too!
Mass - I guess we will be the "last WoMAN standing!" lol
I wonder if you take dairy products? I drink a lot of milk and eat a lot of cheese. I am told my bones are really strong... it is the muscles around them that are giving out!! I have already had aches in my shoulders, arm and my intercostal muscles! lol
Chi Thom - we definitely need to "roll with the punches" and move on, accepting change as a new adventure. Thanks for dropping by.
For many years I have had intermittent pain in the base of the thumbs on both hands. I assume it is arthritis.
Anti-inflammatory drugs seem to help.
The last time I renewed my membership I think I paid twice by mistake but imagined I would still be using the site for a while.
Mass - Yes, when i read she was losing her "siding" I had no idea what it was. We have houses built of bricks and slate tiles not sidings and shingles. It takes wind over 100 mph to remove tiles and part of a brick wall would only fall if it was old and derelict.
But as I always say - "Things" can be replaced at a cost... people cannot. So I was glad it spared you both.
So here is a question for you all... how do you hurt your thumb cleaning your teeth!!!!
Somehow this morning, whilst using my electric toothbrush, I did something to my thumb base. My mouse thumb at that! It really throbs at the moment so I will have to plaster on the Bio Freeze to see if that helps!
It is so quiet around here... I suppose that is to be expected but I will hang around until the end. I like getting my money worth! I am a paid up member until 2018-09-26 12:03:07!!!
I wonder if they will give refunds - lol
Good Morning Sandi! ~ When I mentioned about our three blown off shingles needing replacement last week, I meant small asphalt roof shingles and not those used on one's main home itself. I can easily see the confusion there between what we usually call shingles here and the types usually used on the outside of homes in England. Our original roofer did a great VERY TIMELY job in replacing them last week, (before our recent blizzard) and checked others of potential concern to hammer down as well. He only charged us $30.00 for the entire job! That's why I say, compared to Prose, my hubby and I certainly have nothing to complain about so far!
Like you, I'm also deemed a WU ads-free subscriber till around June 26, 2018. I used to pay $10 per year but, having been a longtime subscriber here for awhile now, they suddenly allowed two years worth for the price of one. You're absolutely right in that we should, at least, get $5.00 of it back for eliminating our use of individual blogs, etc. early next month. Now, it all seems like quite an IBM extortion racket. LOL!
It is eerily quiet on these blogs now and I'm saddened by how many now have seemed to have closed down or left too soon. I just can't bow out myself right now as these blogs have been my daily oasis and habit for such a long time. I'm heartened by those newer blogs that have sprung up to keep us all in touch but many don't allow the kind of creativity I like to express here due to the types of formatting allowed here. It's fun to create colorful backdrops, various fonts and sizes plus shadow boxes around maps or pics and be able to embed certain fun widgets. Glad I was able to copy all those codes down onto my MS Word just in case I might happen to need it for future reference. Fingers crossed!
Sorry to hear about your painful thumb. I'm finding, too, that since I've reached official senior status, I'm increasingly experiencing sharp aches and pains that are sometimes associated with such years. I'm still gob smacked by the fact that, late last December, my left foot suffered a stress fracture ,no less, merely by getting up from my computer desk chair and just walking on it. Hope my bones aren't turning to sawdust this soon! Eeeeek!
Well, I will continue to catch you here till Apr. 2nd as well as on Flickr. I guess we're a couple of WU diehards. Last gals standing ... so to speak. We shall soldier on!
Hi SQUIZ; I have an acquaintance in Chicago who is from Hereford. That's the closest to you that I know.
Do you know what Socrates said about memory? Socrates didn't write, and he bemoaned the advent of writing, because, he said, if we write things down, we won't have to remember everything, and that would be a loss of the excellent memories that everyone had to have in his time.
Everything changes, and so do we. You already know that, of course. See you around.
Hi Sandi! ~ Glad to have heard from Prose last night via blog that she, Raindad and Mimi are doing alright after all the severe siding damage yielded to her home resulting from a ferocious windstorm affecting her region. Boy, my hubby and I have nothing to complain about as we only had to have three or so roofing shingles (at a very minimal cost) replaced from a severe windstorm that had happened nearly a week before our Nor'easter or blizzard. Talk about impeccable timing there!
It appears many in the upper mid-Atlantic to Northeast regions of the U.S. are being affected by such unprecedented cold and weather right now. It's only 21F this am and official spring arrives in only four more days, Mar. 20th. Strange indeed!
I think we'll all be happy when the spring season normalizes again to where people can post more cheerful or colorfully related pics onto Flickr for all of us to see. It feels weird that I'm posting snowy trees mid-March where some others are now posting sprouting plants or budding flowers.
Hi All - chatting (or yakking as Ylee calls it) is what the WU Survivor group will be all about. It is not a replacement for WU... both Rob and Aqua/Rain have provided that, but it is a place to go and leave a message that will be picked up by friends and replied to.
Flickr does have the edge on mail, because if you have set it up correctly it will send a copy to your outer mail. I have a notification box that pops up in the bottom corner of my desktop, so if I am on the computer, and someone mails me via Flickr, I know almost immediately.
Several tasks to do today - be back later
It is the Ides of March.... watch your back!!!!!
Aren't you in the WU Survivor Group, ycd? On your Flickr home page, click on "Groups", and it show the WU Survivor Group, if you have joined!
You can start your own thread there, like I did; I'm sure if Sandi ever has a problem with anything you say(which I doubt), she'd let you know about it!
#50:
Discussion threads? All I can do so far is see the photos and comment on the photo itself.
That is worthwhile (to me) but I don't think that is the place to rant.
Besides ycd, some of us don't even upload images there, aside from the occasional cam capture! All I'll probably do there is go to the discussion threads, and yak. :' )
