Getting out Again

Over the past several months, many things have conspired to keep me from doing any serious hikes or backpacks: terrible forest fires in the southwest, dry conditions causing closures of national forests where I like to hike, family trips, and finally my husband’s serious illness. But, two weeks ago, I finally got to go backpacking! It was just an overnight, but getting out into the wilderness was the best medicine I could have asked for after several difficult ...

An Abundance of Rainbows

Oh, how I wish I had a decent camera! Moist, unstable air and a cold front moving through the area have been creating spectacular weather here. It is visually stunning--rainbows abound, brilliant rays of sun illuminate the edges of clouds, and multiple layers of different types of clouds fill the sky. As a young child in Connecticut, I had literally never seen a rainbow. But once I moved to the desert southwest, I saw my first one. And now I’ve seen many. The...

Without going into great detail, I must report that my husband, also known as 99.9%, suffered a heart attack and had to undergo emergency bypass surgery last week. He is home now and seems to be recovering well, though he is still weak and has a long way to go. I am just thankful at this point that he survived the risky surgery and remains with us! I should point out that he is only 43.Weather-wise, we're deep into monsoon season here and also having a heat wave ...

During our recent trip to the San Diego area to take our 5-year-old to LegoLand, we stayed in a national chain hotel. It was a small, older model of this hotel chain’s inventory but was quite adequate for our needs as we were to be out recreating most of the time. The room was of good size, there was a pool and hot tub right outside our room and it was reasonably clean. Sure, it wasn’t fancy and there was a lot of highway noise, but it was a good budget optio...

In case you were wondering, the aeration of the yard, (along with some monsoonal rains and 99.99% adjusting the spray pattern of the sprinklers) seemed to work and we actually have enough grass to mow now! And there is green! We are having a break in the heat. Even though it is the middle of the afternoon, the temperature is only 88. Our pool water was splendid, perfect, just warm enough. I floated blissfully, watching the cumulus congestus grow and drift by, unt...
