Looks like a many-weeks-long period of extreme cloudiness (with not much rain) has finally cleared out. Could it have been some sort of record? Kinda like living in Ohio near the Lake.

The very destructive "hybrid" "Frankenstorm" Hurricane Sandy passed north of our area last night and today. It was only a Category One storm but combined with a cold frontal low to deliver a destructive storm surge, high winds and flooding rains over much of the coastal mid-Atlantic and Northeast. There was little damage at our location (south of the brunt of the storm) from the only-moderate-strength local winds and perhaps 7 cm of rain that fell. There were electri...

June 30 Derecho

Late evening June 30 a very violent storm ("derecho") passed through Virginia. Local effects were relatively minor--16 hour electrical outage, roads blocked overnight by fallen trees, some very large trees uprooted, others snapped in half. At the arrival of this storm the wind blew very forcefully for some minutes, seemingly without gusting. After that arrival event, the storm changed to a quality similar to a routine thunderstorm.

Wide amplitude cycles persist, though with shorter periods lately--cool dry spells have been alternating with multi-day blasts of high heat. Only a few days ago the low was 9C, and now the forecast highs for today and tomorrow are pegged at 38C.
