Check out the temperature map for the continental US. Interesting because a 'pocket' of sub zero temps have become 'trapped' over Colorado. This is fairly unusual, in that the cold temps usually come down in a 'finger', following the so called 'Alberta Clipper' (wiki it for details). The 'finger' then recedes back into Canada. It's not that common for a pocket of sub zero temps to become trapped South of the Canada-US border. To see the effects of this, check o...

Groundhog day - that holiest of holidays. Friends, family, food, presents, all wrapped up under the fur tree. But, even more important than that, GroundHog day means an even MORE significant event - that's right, it's the MIDPOINT of WINTER!!! Winter is half over! Count 'em up if you don't believe me. December 21 was the winter solstice. So, that's 10 days in December, plus 31 days in January, plus 28 days in Feb. equals 69 days. The vernal equinox occurs on ...

Temp. was a crisp 10 degrees (f) last night. Oh, that's below Zero. Headed for even colder temps tonight. Yesterday (Sunday, Jan. 30) was somewhat unique, as the wind was blowing fiercely (20-40MPH) while snowing fairly heavily. There are a few drifts around town. (Knock on wood) The wind really doesn't blow that much around here. Coming from the high plains of Colorado, I'm used to it blowing ALL the time. When it didn't blow, it was a unique event. But yeste...

Unbelievable. It almost looks surrealistic out there, because the SUN is out! At least, I think it's the sun. It's been so long since I've seen it, I forget what it's like. It froze solid overnight. Remember those puddles of water I told you about yesterday??? Well, today they're ice skating rinks. The slushy snow is all frozen solid as well. Temp is a brisk 30 deg F, with a SW wind at 10-15 MPH. Just enough to make it seem even colder. NWS says we're heade...

Rain? RAIN??? In early January?

Well, whattya know. I woke up this morning to... rain. And lots of it. Not 'pouring', but certainly coming down pretty good. And it was 37 deg. F. On top of the foot and a half of snow that's already out there. By the time I left for work, there were already huge water puddles everywhere. Since the temperature is supposed to drop this weekend, heading for single digit highs on Monday, this means huge ice skating rinks all over town, on what are supposed to be...
