Some of our friends from the University of Michigan pointed us to a 3D photo that members of the project team had taken during their tornado hunt this year. We've reproduced it here, but you can take a look at it on their pages as well. You'll need Quicktime installed to view the image.

Before I get to today, I must update for the 8th and 9th, but I will be brief. On the 8th we stayed down in Eastern Central Colorado. The weather didn't pan out and after hours of waiting for capping to disappear, we gave up. We traveled that night to Denver for a night of recuperation, which took the form of the Rockies game.On the 9th we moved up to Cheyenne, Wy once again waiting for convection to start bubbling. By mid-afternoon we started to get some action. Rel...

Hello all, from the Nebraska/Iowa border! We are nearing the final week of Vortex2, which ends June 15th, so there is certainly a renewed sense of urgency within the group to ensure the best data collection. Overall, the group has moved up the departure time for each morning in order to reach areas that may have previously been out of our range.Friday, I was moved to Texas Tech's StickNet team, which was particularly exciting for me. I'd never worked in those vehicl...

The past few weeks have been pretty inactive for Vortex 2 in terms of severe weather targets. We have seen more U.S. national monuments lately than tornados. Last Thursday we were able to visit Devils Tower in Wyoming, which appeared in Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind. It was a breathtaking sight to see and we were able to climb up part way to take in a gorgeous view of the sunset. The next day we had a down day and were able to go visit ...

Hello from central Nebraska! The VORTEX 2 project has seen relatively calmer weather over the past few days, but between a few thunderstorms and some down-time sightseeing, the crews have still kept busy during our travels across the Plains.Last Wednesday, the armada was located in northeast Colorado in a region of cool but somewhat moist air, with appreciable low-level southeasterly winds. By early afternoon, convergence in the near-surface flow on the Palmer Div...
