I awoke early this morning . . . and in the pre-dawn light noticed a white sheen across the landscape. A really heavy frost??? No! It was SNOW! An early October snowfall in our part of Northern Ontario rarely hangs around. In the next few hours, or tomorrow at the latest, it will probably melt away. Therefore, I enjoy the beauty of this first snowfall . . . without the trepidation of winter's arrival and a too-long season of cold and snow. My sister, who lives...

As I looked out my window this morning ... I saw the sun rising in the east over Lake Superior. It was a red ball of fire burning through the fog. On my way out the door (to drive my hubby to work) I grabbed my camera and headed for my favourite sunrise spot . . . at the Mission Marsh Wetland Park at the mouth of the Kaministiquia River. From this vantage point I can watch the sun rise over Lake Superior. I was disappointed that the sun's colour had changed by t...

Wild Toronto Weather

The old adage "be careful what you wish for" has come to mind of late. I had been lamenting our lack of "interesting" weather. Well ... I had nothing to complain about in Toronto on Thursday the 20th of August! I was walking across the York University campus in Toronto after a day of work. It was very windy ... a hot, strong wind. It felt unusual ... but then again, I am used to the cool, refreshing summer breezes off of Lake Superior. Nearing my apartment, I...

Strange Summer

Thunder Bay has had a cool and rainy summer. Not that kind of rainy day that never ends. Instead, these have been days of sun and clouds, and showers, and thunderstorms. If I look out my window to the east right now I see: sun and clouds over Lake Superior. If I walk across the house and look to the west, I see patches of blue and white with a dark raincloud lingering in the background. In another 30 minutes? .... who knows! The rain could miss us, we could ha...

Discovering Beavers

I am writing my PhD thesis on the Fur Trade in Canada .... so I've been wrapped up in reading about beavers. And last night I got my own beaver experience. I was checking some of my favourite photo places and came across what I thought was one beaver on the side of the road. After stopping, I noticed that there were 3 beavers on one side of the road ... and that there were another 3 beavers on the other side! I was enthralled ... and clicked away while they went...
