My middle school weather lessons in the late 70s told me that mammatus clouds could become funnel clouds. Now what I observe on Weather Underground and local TV seems to say mammatus clouds simply indicate a thunder cell or possibly hail.Can someone update my education?

About 15 months later, I have revisited the same park to "stop and smell the cormorants."
