This is the Story of a Blog

By: RobDaHood , 4:04 AM GMT on March 08, 2017

Welcome to The Ark

This is the story of a blog.

I lurked on Masters’ blog for a long time, just looking for storm information. One night, I guess Angie got tired of hearing me exclaiming to the computer things like “Look at the water vapor loop! There is a weak spot in that ridge right there! It’s going there! It’s got nowhere else to go and that ridge is weakening!” and she told me why don’t you type that! Because I have to join. Then join! Eventually I signed up as a WU member. Cotillion welcomed me, as did Pottery, somewhat tentatively...something about my avatar. Miss Nadia quizzed me about history and ships. I guess I passed the test because I soon started making friends. I got to be friends with SurfMom.

One day Surfmom encouraged me to start a blog. There had been some infighting on Doc’s blog and some trolls. This was in the days before the volunteer mod squad. “Well, what would I blog about Surfy?” How about animals. You could call it The Ark. We could all hang out there and you could keep all the trolls away and everyone would be nice and it would be a fun place to play!”

Well, one day I posted a photo of a timberwolf/malamute puppy and Angie’s hand petting it on Doc’s blog. People wanted to know more, I didn’t want to sidetrack the blog and Surfy kept saying “start a blog...start a blog!” So I did.

Some People came and looked and posted. More came. Before long it was really busy. The day came that one of Surfy’s sons was involved in a really bad automobile accident. She was so upset that she couldn’t even post, but she called me. I posted here and on her blog with regular updates until things were better and she could type about it.

So, being the go-between, I made a lot of new friends. The blog got bigger and better. We started writing cooperative fiction about a Spacecraft called The Ark and it’s gallant crew going on grand adventures. It was great fun.

Eventually there was some turmoil on the blogs and it spilled over into mine. I had responsibilities elsewhere and didn’t want a blog with trouble when I couldn’t be there to keep the peace. I didn’t really have a choice but to shut it down for a while. WU was hemorrhaging users but I did manage to keep in touch with a few people by phone and email during that time. When I was able, I came back. A short time later, I reopened the blog.

It has never been what it was in the early days, but it has been fun. I’ve made lots of friends. It has given me a creative outlet and a way to give my brain a break. I think we’ve run a pretty good ship here. Partly because I’ve been clear about my expectation of people behaving but mostly because it’s a good bunch of people who just want to get along. Some of us are very different in our religious beliefs or lack thereof, in our politics, our ages, our educational and professional backgrounds...in just about everything. We leave that at the door because, just like in the real world, people are more alike than they are different. And here, at least, people just want to have fun and be friends.

That is what made this make believe ship magical. The crew and the readers.

That is why I don’t want to leave it all behind.

So I started a web site for The Ark to call home. It’s not perfect and it is evolving, but it is a home. A bunch of the crew, the occasional posters, and the readers have already signed up. You are welcome to come there. All you need is an email address, a first name, a user name, and if you like, an avatar. If you like you can bring your WU user name as most have. So, this is your official invitation to visit https://robdahood.com/ark. Look forward to hearing from you.

There are other’s like Aqua and Sandi who are helping keep WU users blogging. Join one of those sites, join ours, go to Facebook, do all of the above, but stay in touch.

Thanks for all the good times and the Memories!

-Captain Hood

Probably. And don't forget, Normandy was settled by Northmen, who later crossed the channel and we all know how that ended.

You're welcome. You can message me there or post a question in my blog there and I'll be happy to answer it. Glad you made it aboard. It's a little different, but you'll soon get the hang of things.

If anyone tries to register there and doesn't get an activation email, (it has happened in about 2 out of 50 cases) check back later and try to log on. I can activate accts manually if for any reason the activation link doesn't reach you or you can't make it work. Long as I have your email address.

You can also use the contact link on the site if you have an issue.

In this case, Patti left a post on the public page and I activated her acct. as soon as I logged in again.

Hi Rob! ~ Posted on the new Ark and now here at the tremendously humbled, compassionate synopsis Ylee gave, regarding most of his close WU friends, on his now closing "Windows to the World" blogsite I really teared up! I was also chagrinned to learn that I had somehow initially banned him from my blog due to an inundation of disturbing trolls on my site at the time. Glad all was soon rectified!!!! He's quite the humble but wise compassionate guy and has been a real credit to the WU Blogging Community. Happy that, for now, he started up another blog here under another moniker so to remain posting till things are truly shut down.

Hope that he'll be able to continue venturing over to the new Ark and, with time, perhaps the two of you might be able to collaborate on figuring out or setting up a new webcam site for him to post more "Windows to the World". He developed quite the exceptional concept here and it would be a shame to lose it and his other varied interests as of April 3rd.

There is a wee bit of Irish in my family tree. Also some English, some German, a bunch of Scandinavian, and some Native American. Basically I'm a mutt.

Erm... are you aware it should actually be bacon and cabbage...?

I investigated and found that corned beef was used as a substitute for bacon by Irish-American immigrants in the late 19th century as pork bacon was difficult to get hold of. Hence corned beef is now the traditional St Patrick's day fare in the US.

Hey Mass.

We usually have the classic corned beef, cabbage, potatoes, and carrots for St Patrick's. Angie asked that we put it off until tomorrow because she was planning on cooking a pizza tonight, and I think I'm going to cook the corned beef on the BBQ, which essentially makes it pastrami.

Good Morning Arkers! ~ Just stopping by here to wish you a HAPPY ST. PATTY'S DAY and may the luck of
the Irish be upon you this sunny, but cold day up here in Massland!

I'm leaving you with some freshed brewed Irish coffee with Irish bread and scones to kick off the St. Patty's Day
am menu. I seriously doubt I'll be able to tempt Snake or anyone else with a Corned Beef and Cabbage dinner
later on, so fill up on that delicious Irish bread. LOL!

Sure and Begorrah and Erin go Braughless!

Hey shore.

You are correct. The problems that Ylee is experiencing are likely due to the configurations on the wordpress.com site.

It gets very confusing because they use the same name, but I'll try to explain briefly.

Wordpress is website creation software that can be used to quickly and easily create an internet presence. It is open sourced, free and created by wordpress.org. It can be installed on nearly any server. Most popular hosting companies have a "click and install" option for it if you have an account with them which is one of the things that makes it so popular.

Another option is to use Wordpress.com which is just a hosting company for wordpress web sites. They make it very simple since they do all the configuration, security updates, etc. They make most of the choices for you so you can just focus on the appearance and content of the site. The choices they make can also restrict what you can do on a site. I believe that is what Ylee is encountering.

That was the point of my experiment of Installing the Wordpress software on my server. I used the standard one click install, from my hosting company and all I had to do was enter the subdomain of robdahood.com that I wanted it installed in, a user name, and a password. I then added a page to put an entry on, pasted the link to the Milos cam into the entry box, clicked post entry, and there it was working as intended.

I don't know what modifications that wordpress.com makes to the original code, being open sourced you can do that, and I don't know what restrictions they place on content or what caching scheme they have implimented, but I am sure that the source of the problem lies there. Ylee has repeatedly demonstrated that he is quite competent when it comes to posting cams so I don't think it is anything that he is doing wrong. It is just a simple link to an external image that should update every time a page reloads. You'd think that something that simple would work.

I mean, we are really restricted as to what we can do here on WU and it works here!

I'm determined to help Ylee any way that I can because I enjoy his cams so much. I appreciate your efforts to help too.

The wordpress installation on my site was just a temporary thing to help figure this out. I won't be leaving it up (it's dog ugly! LOL) but will work with Ylee to find a new public home for his cams if he can't work this out.

Rob, I've been following the conversation between you and Ylee re:WordPress. This caught my attention this morning, over on Ylee's page:

"Installed WP to a subdomain on my server, installed the latest security update, added a gallery, put the milos cam in it, updates just fine. All with default settings."

I know less about computers and programming than almost anyone, but now I'm curious: did you install WP.org, or WP.com? The whole point of WP.org is that it's a self-install for people who want to host their own blogs. The point of WP.com is that you can't mess around with the back end. Nearly everything, except formatting with html and some CSS for people with upgrades, is beyond the reach of the user. If you managed to install WP.com, there are some WP programmers who'd love to know about it! :-)

I'm pretty much convinced the problem Ylee's having is due to his using WP.com. If he was on WP.org, he could do just about anything he was capable of, but on WP.com, you're constrained by the programmers' decisions about what will and will not be allowed. The truth is, WP.com often is used to test ideas before making them available for WP.org.

Anyway, I was curious about it all.

Those are just crazy numbers, but I remember there were a couple of places in 2011 that got around those figures. Going back, I think my blog topped out in 2012, at about 300-400 comments per month. I had a whole bunch of lurkers, though! Revolvermaps had a couple of thousand places on mine, too.

Your blog is different though. A lot of time people, myself included, go there and just look at the cams but don't comment everytime.

This has always been a chat blog, which kept it near the top of the index most of the time and made it more subject to a random click. The two blogs are like apples and oranges. I'm sure a lot of those people came to mine, looked, shook their heads, and never came back.

I've had a lot of people that seldom or never posted here sign up on the new site, which is way cool. It means that we did something that they liked here. I am sure that your new WP pages will have a lot of people following you there. And I'll be one of them.

I was going through cleaning house for a while and some of those months back in 2009 I was doing 4-5 blogs per month and we had between 4 and 6 thousand comments per month. WU was hopping and I remember the map showing 5500 places mapped.

The new site will be a lot better for my blog but I'm gonna miss this place.

Put forecasts on the WeatherDeck section of the new site today. Need to build a set of pages there by region and a tropical page. Site has really started to look nice IMHO and everything is working well. I really appreciate all of you that have visited and given me feedback on what you would like to see there.

Biggest thing left to do is some minor modification to the page scripts to add a couple of functions, but it works well as it is. Been a busy 10 days.

Sorry about that!
Started getting all sorts of SQL errors. Was downright embarrassing!
Knew right away what was causing it because of when it happened. Had find where in the code they were getting their time stamps and make adjustments to it because my server runs on UTC and doesn't care when people change their watches, but the site software does. Made a change in the code that should prevent that from happening again.

Because of the timestamp problem, anything posted or any new memberships that were attempted might not have gone through. If there is a problem, please let me know.

issue shutting things down til tomorrow. For awhile there, I thought I had possibly been

Just before your new website went down, I had posted my upcoming forecast for the week under

Here is an update on the new site.

PM or Private Messaging is working well. When you have a message, you will see a red circle nest to Messages in the top navigation bar. Click on messages to go there and read them. Messages are organized by conversation, It also shows when someone has read a message, which is handy. I think you will like the way it works.

I have member blogs set up and working, I just need to figure out how I am going to index them and set some default configurations. Then I need to do a tutorial about setting them up. It’s not that hard, but you will have a lot more options than you do on WU.

I'm going to be working on a detailed "User Manual".

I've still got to figure out an easy way to do quotes.
I've still got to figure out pagination of comments.

Hi GG!!

Thank you BriarCraft.

Actually the public/private split is the default setup for the software that I started with. It allows people to take a peek without signing up, yet kinda keeps the rest private unless you are willing to register. We can still make as much of it public as we want to and add more public blogs. But right now I'm still getting things arranged and making modifications to page layouts, etc. But it does work and lets us communicate. People can experiment, give me feedback and I will adjust accordingly.

I'm happy that you signed up and now you know where to find us. Give me a little time, then let me know what you think. I appreciate the input.

Yes, let the Vogons be bygones!
Take good care and keep in touch!
