The past week has brought some beautiful sunrises and sunsets to the Colorado Front Range. The evening of Thursday, January 5, 2012 was no exception as Thornton was treated to an amazing display. On Thursday evening, this cloud was present and lit up in shades of orange and red as the sun set behind the Rocky Mountains. What made the beautiful scene amazing was an unusual circular formation in the bottom of the cloud. All the latest Thornton, Colorado weather news a...

Lunar eclipse makes standing in the cold worthwhile

It was a very cold morning on the Colorado Front Range as the temperature dropped to 15° but the fog that was forecast never materialized and we had a great view of the lunar eclipse. Just before dawn the Earth’s shadow began to encroach on the moon and just as the eclipse was peaking, the moon set behind the Rocky Mountains.I managed to get out and snap some pics at Barr Lake State Park northeast of Denver. While my fingers were numb, it was worth it. ;-) ...

Questions arise about Denver's weather station; Move prevents historical comparisons

Does a move of 12 miles make a difference in what type of weather is seen in Colorado? Longtime residents know that our weather can vary greatly over short distances and this has many questioning the placement of Denver’s official weather monitoring station. From 1871 to 1949 Denver’s weather was recorded at the National Weather Service’s office in downtown Denver. In January 1950 a move was made to Stapleton International Airport. As that facility aged Denver...

Denver's monsoon continues with ongoing thunderstorms

La Niña is winding down and normally Denver would expect a drier than normal monsoon. Mother Nature however has other plans as she not only brought the season to Thornton early, it came with a vengeance this past week.In a presentation that just came out at the first of the month, the National Weather Service discussed the coming monsoon. At that time forecasters predicted a drier and shorter than normal monsoon for the Colorado Front Range. Thus far it has been...

Benjamin Franklin - The nation's first storm chaser

Everyone is of course well aware of Ben Franklin's experiments with lightning. What most may not know is that the nation's premier statesman was also a storm chaser. Further, Thomas Jefferson was another signer of the Declaration of Independence that monitored the weather closely. From a story I wrote today for Examiner.com:Franklin also was one of the nation's first storm chasers. In a letter to Peter Collinson dated August 25, 1755 Franklin relayed his experienc...
