climate change is always a good conversation topic - in Canada where I lived for many years, it was THE conversation topic- period. People's lives depended on accurate forecast- traveling during a blizzard is almost suicidal... for farmers it meant a 'make or brake' situation, year after year. When we moved to Spain, I soon found out that people out in the country also are tuned to the weather and climate- .Prolonged droughts.... even the olive trees started to suff...

I visited the Ebro delta a few days ago and had a look at the rice crops. Many fields are still under water, but the draining has begun. The Ebro delta is one of the important rice growing areas in Spain. Farmers are growing about 12 different kinds of rice- 8 of which are local varieties. The fields are cultivated in early spring, seeding happens in and around May. Rice is now seeded, rather than planted as in the old days. The fields must be flooded and drained seve...

every time I go to Switzerland I am amazed at how green it is there. Maybe I have lived in desert like countries too long? The Canadian Prairies, my home for over 30 years has minimal precipitation, the only thing that keeps it from becoming a desert is the 6 months of freeze. Now I live near the Mediterraenan coast in Catalonia. There used to be two distinct rainy seasons in fall and spring, and heavy thunderstorms in summer. Lately this has not happened in Southern ...

I have obviously forgotten to post anything in the past months- have no idea where the time went, LOL Having too much fun?We have been busy having visitors, visiting, sightseeing- and lately gardening. My garden is in- all it needs is water. The weather is summer like with very warm days and mild nights- no rain to speak of- so the irrigation system is a real blessing.Spring is just about over at lower altitudes- and really starting up in the mountains. It is fun to ...
