FINALLY snowing

... in Boulder, CO, at least. I'm TDY at National Center for Atmospheric Research for a few weeks. It's been in the 70's and even hitting 80 for the past week, and was even 79F around here yesterday afternoon. But, there's termination dust up on the Front Range (though nobody around here knows what termination dust is) and maybe 3-6" of that "mashed potato" type snow on Thursday. Can't wait to get back to Fairbanks to real snow.

The tunnel

We'll soon be entering that "tunnel" where any solar influence is extremely minimal. Seems to go from around early November to early February, at which point you start feeling like there's a sun again. At our own place, we lose the sun completely around December 3 (my Mom's birthday), and start seeing some short-lived rays of sunshine on the walls around January 11 (My Dad's birthday).According to today's WFO FAI AFD, we're about there:Interior...a much drier regi...

Charlie O'Toole is playing "Let It Snow," on KFBX this morning. I'm guessing this is the "sticking snow," and hopefully we won't have to see that bare, ugly ground (that just screams, "you've got work to do") until mid- to late-April.It's only about an inch, and hopefully the sun is low enough now that it won't melt before we get the "real" stuff.

Tucson Weather

We got dumped on yesterday evening here in Tucson. The airport (which is probably somewhat representative of where I am - about 5 miles NW) showed only 0.25". We had some small, cells come through, then a large elongated E-W cell move up from the south. They were traveling about 40mph, and even the big cell only had about 15 minutes of heavy rain. But, it was enough to turn the streets into raging rivers. I was really surprised to see people driving through the...

La Nina Impact on Alaska Weather

Since tundraJEM mentioned the possibility of a colder than normal winter here in Alaska due to the effects of La Nina, and I've heard it from others, I thought I'd look a little deeper into it. I always hate "rules of thumb," and like to know "why," so here's a pretty good link from the Anchorage Forecast Office:La Nina Impact on AlaskaAnd here's a graphic that shows the "mean" or "average" synoptic conditions during a La Nina event. Of course, as one of the meteo...
