Flash Flood Warning
Issued: 5:56 PM MDT Jul. 17, 2018 – National Weather Service

... The Flash Flood Warning remains in effect until 815 PM MDT for
central Rio Arriba County...

At 550 PM MDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms ending over
Apache Mesa. One to two inches of rain recently fell over and near
The Mesa. Flash flooding is expected in all drainages leading off
The Mesa.

Flash flooding will remain over mainly rural areas of central Rio
Arriba County. Drainages into El Vado Reservoir from the north and
west will be impacted. Route 95 will be impacted southwest of Heron
Lake to Stinking Lake.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of normally
dry arroyos and streambeds, low water crossings, intersections, and
underpasses as well as other poor drainage and low lying areas.

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where water covers the roadway.
The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross safely.

* Arroyo and small stream flood advisory for...
southwestern Rio Arriba County in north central New Mexico...
northwestern Sandoval County in north central New Mexico...
eastern San Juan County in northwestern New Mexico...

* until 845 PM MDT.

* At 639 PM MDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to
thunderstorms. This will cause Arroyo and small stream flooding in
the advisory area. Over 1.5 inches of rain have already fallen
with another half inch possible. The potential exists for flash
flooding to develop

* flooding will remain over mainly rural areas of southwestern Rio
Arriba... northwestern Sandoval and eastern San Juan counties.
Highway 550 will be impacted by hazardous ponding and flooding of
low laying areas between counselors and Nageezi.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the
roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross
safely.

The heavy rainfall and slow movement of these storms may result in
flooding of Road intersections and low lying areas. Hazardous water
levels will develop in normally dry arroyos.

west central Rio Arriba County in north central New Mexico...

* until 745 PM MDT.

* At 541 PM MDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to
thunderstorms. This will cause Arroyo and small stream flooding in
the advisory area. Up to one inch of rain has already fallen.

* Flooding will remain over mainly rural areas of west central Rio
Arriba County. Bear Canyon and Chico Canyon will be impacted, as
well as topicito creek downstream to Route 537.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Remain alert for flooding even in locations not receiving rain.
Arroyos, streams, and rivers can become raging killer currents in a
matter of minutes, even from distant rainfall.

thunderstorms. This will cause Arroyo and small stream flooding in
the advisory area. Over 1 inch of rain has already fallen in
spots, and an additional inch of rain is possible. The potential
exits for flash flooding to develop.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Heron Lake State Park, El Vado and El Vado Lake State Park. Route
95 will be impacted from Heron Lake across the Jicarilla Apache
reservation.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

In mountainous or hilly terrain there are numerous low water
crossings which are potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not
attempt to cross flooded roads. Find an alternate Route.

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the
roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross
safely.

* At 422 PM MDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to slow-
moving thunderstorms. This will cause Arroyo and small stream
flooding in the advisory area. Over one inch of rain has already
fallen in spots.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Dulce, Lumberton and Monero. Portions of Highway 84 and Highway 64
will be impacted by hazardous ponding.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

Both localized and distant heavy rainfall will create dangerous flows
in arroyos and over low water crossings. Do not attempt to drive
through these waters. Water in arroyos may travel many miles and take
hours to reach your location from upstream rain areas.
