Tropical Weather: Tropical Depression Alberto (North Atlantic) Tropical Storm Bud (East Pacific) Tropical Storm Sanvu (Western Pacific)
Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Tuesday, May 22, 2012.

Tropical Storm Alberto is expected to weaken to tropical depression strength on Tuesday as it accelerates northeastward through the western Atlantic Ocean. This system is expected to continue on a northeastward track through Wednesday and dissipate by Thursday. For more information on Tropical Storm Alberto and other tropical activity, please visit http://www.wunderground.com/tropical.

Meanwhile, a cold front pushing across the Eastern Valleys will reach the Eastern Seaboard with more unsettled weather activity. The front will stir up scattered showers and thunderstorms from portions of the Lower Great Lakes and Northeast southward into the Southeast and Central Gulf Coast states through the day. Areas along the Gulf Coast and across much of Florida and Texas will remain hot on Tuesday as daytime highs reach into the upper 80s and 90s.

To the west of this activity, a cold front will cross the Northwest, bringing rain showers with afternoon and evening thunderstorms to parts of the Northern Intermountain West and Northern Rockies. This frontal system will merge with another disturbance dropping out of southern Canada as it progresses eastward. Expect thunderstorm activity to spread into the Northern Plains ahead of this system. Storms in this region may turn severe with very large hail and damaging wind gusts. Meanwhile, a stronger front from the Pacific will reach the Pacific Northwest with a cooler airmass and precipitation.

Elsewhere in the West, temperatures across the Desert Southwest will climb into the 100 to near 110 degree range on Tuesday.

... Locally dense fog will affect the morning commute across
eastern North Carolina this morning...

Patchy dense fog was occurring across eastern North Carolina
early this morning. Visibilities have locally dropped to 1/4 of
mile in spots and this will make driving to work or school
hazardous this morning.

Motorists are advised to leave extra time to arrive at their
destinations. Also leave plenty of distance between your vehicle
and the one in front of you and use only low beam headlights.

The fog is forecast to diminish around 9 am.

... Beach hazards statement in effect from 8 am EDT this morning
through this evening...

The National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City has issued
a beach hazards statement... which is in effect from 8 am EDT this
morning through this evening.

* Hazards... high rip current risk and dangerous shore break.

* Location... along the beaches north of Cape Lookout.

* Timing and tides... the most likely time for life threatening rip
currents will be a couple of hours either side of low tide. Low
tide will occur around 245 PM this afternoon.

* Potential impacts... dangerous rip currents combined with rough
surf of 4 to 6 feet.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore... which occur most often at low spots or breaks in The
Sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as groins... jetties
and piers. Heed the advice of lifeguards and the beach patrol. Pay
attention to flags and posted signs posted near beach access
points and lifeguard stations.

If you become caught in a rip current... do not panic. Remain calm
and begin to swim parallel to shore. Once you are away from the
force of the rip current... begin to swim back to the beach. Do not
attempt to swim directly against a rip current... since it can
exhaust and even kill the strongest swimmer.

Shore break occurs when waves break directly on the beach. The
most common injuries with strong shore break are neck and back
injuries... which most often occur when the powerful surf throws a
swimmer or surfer head first into the bottom. It is extremely
important to protect your head and neck whenever you are in
breaking waves by keeping your hands in front of you at all times.

... Thunderstorm safety...

The following is a safe boating message from the National safe
boating Council and the National Weather Service for this year's
National safe boating week.

Thunderstorms can be a mariner's worst nightmare. They can develop
quickly and create dangerous wind and wave conditions.
Thunderstorms can bring shifting and gusty winds... lightning...
waterspouts... and torrential downpours which can turn a day's
pleasure into a nightmare of distress.

There are no specific warnings or advisories for lightning but
all thunderstorms produce lightning. A lightning strike to a
vessel can be catastrophic... especially if it results in a fire
or loss of electronics. If your boat has a cabin... then stay inside
and avoid touching metal or electrical devices. If your boat
doesn't have a cabin... stay as low as you can in the boat.

Boaters should use extra caution when thunderstorm conditions
exist and have a plan of escape. Mariners are especially
vulnerable as at times they may unable to reach port quickly. It
is therefore strongly recommended you do not venture out if
thunderstorms are a possibility. If you do venture out and
recognize thunderstorms nearby... head to port or safe shelter as
quickly as possible. Ultimately... boating safety begins ashore with
planning and training. Keep in mind that thunderstorms are usually
brief so waiting it out is better than riding it out.
