Areal Flood Warning
Issued: 4:46 PM CDT Aug. 19, 2017 – National Weather Service

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a

* Flood Warning for...
southeastern Sedgwick County in south central Kansas...
northeastern Sumner County in south central Kansas...

* until 845 PM CDT

* at 445 PM CDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing
heavy rain which will cause flooding. Doppler radar estimated over
one inch of rain has already fallen in some areas with an
additional inch of rain possible.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Derby, Mulvane and Belle Plaine.

This includes Interstate 35 between mile markers 29 and 38.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

A Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or occurring. All
interested parties should take necessary precautions immediately.

... Heat advisory in effect until 7 PM CDT this evening...

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a heat
advisory... which is in effect until 7 PM CDT this evening.

* Heat index values... around 105 due to temperatures in the mid
and upper 90s and dewpoints in the middle 70s.

* Timing... til 7 PM. Highest values between 2 and 5 PM.

* Impacts... any activities outdoors will be at an increased risk
for heat exhaustion this afternoon. Please remember to double
check vehicles for children and pets when exiting.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside.
When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early
morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat
exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose
fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.

A heat advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is
expected. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity
will create conditions where heat illnesses are possible. Drink
plenty of fluids and stay in an air conditioned room if possible.
Stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Temperatures within vehicles can become lethal in a few minutes.
Never leave children or pets in vehicles. Remember to beat the
heat, check the backseat.

* significant weather advisory for...
northeastern Sumner County in south central Kansas...

* until 530 PM CDT

* at 505 PM CDT... National Weather Service meteorologists were
tracking a strong thunderstorm just north of Belle Plaine... moving
southeast at 5 mph.

Hail up to the size of dimes... and wind gusts up to 50 mph will be
possible with this storm along with heavy rainfall.

* Locations impacted include...
Mulvane, Belle Plaine and Riverdale.
