Flood Warning

The Flood Warning continues for
the Portneuf River at Pocatello.
* At 11:31 am Wednesday the stage was 8.7 feet.
* Flood stage is 8.5 feet.
* Minor flooding is occurring and minor flooding is forecast.
* Forecast... the river will continue rising to near 9.5 feet by
April 6. Additional rises may be possible thereafter.
* Impact... at 9.4 feet... water will encroach around sitting benches
near the river at the Pacific recycling trailhead.

Areal Flood Watch, Areal Flood Advisory

... Flood Watch remains in effect through Friday afternoon...

The Flood Watch continues for

* portions of central Idaho, eastern Idaho, south central Idaho,
and southeast Idaho, including the following areas, in central
Idaho, big and little Wood River region, Lost
River/pahsimeroi, and Sawtooth Mountains. In eastern Idaho,
upper snake Highlands. In south central Idaho, eastern Magic
Valley. In southeast Idaho, Cache Valley/Idaho portion,
Caribou Highlands, south Central Highlands, and Wasatch
mountains/Idaho portion.

* Through Friday afternoon.

* Excessive snowmelt along with rainfall.

* Above freezing temperatures and moderate to heavy rainfall
tonight through Friday will continue snowmelt across the watch
area. Rain on top of snow will further increase the risk of
runoff and flooding in lower elevations starting tonight and
continuing through Friday.

* Water was beginning to flow over the magic dam spillway with
downstream flows on the Big Wood River across Lincoln County
expected to reach upwards of 5000 cfs around midnight tonight.
At 5300 cfs, floodwaters will spread downstream from the
Reservoir along the Big Wood River reaching within one foot of
Highway 75. The flooding is expected to be similar to the event
that occurred in 2006.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on
current forecasts.

Individuals living near the Big Wood River downstream of the magic
dam should be alert to possible flooding.

You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible
flood warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be
prepared to take action should flooding develop.

The National Weather Service in Pocatello has extended the

* flood advisory for...
snowmelt in...
west central Caribou County in southeastern Idaho...
eastern Bannock County in southeastern Idaho...

* until 215 PM MDT Friday

* emergency management reported high water levels and minor flooding
continues in the Chesterfield to pebble area. The Portneuf River
and King Creek are at full capacity, with some water spilling over
into neighboring fields. At this time, roads and homes are not
affected. However, rivers, creeks, and streams in the advisory
area will continue to run at or just above bankfull, and minor
flooding is expected to continue in low lying areas especially
with additional rainfall expected Wednesday night and Thursday.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

Keep children away from storm drains, culverts, creeks and streams.
Water levels can rise rapidly and sweep children away.

A flood advisory means river or stream flows are elevated, or ponding
of water in urban or other areas is occurring or is imminent.

a dam floodgate release in...
south central Caribou County in southeastern Idaho...
western Franklin County in southeastern Idaho...

* until 115 PM MDT Friday

* emergency management personnel reported high inflows into the
Alexander Reservoir near Soda Springs due to snowmelt and runoff
which has necessitated dam releases. As a result, minor flooding
of low lying areas is expected along The Bear river downstream
from west of Niter to Thatcher, and from Riverdale south to the
Utah border. Additional flooding will remain possible over the
next several days as high flows from the upstream dams continue.
In addition, elevated flows due to snowmelt and runoff on the cub
river near Franklin and Whitney may result in minor flooding.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

Keep children away from storm drains, culverts, creeks and streams.
Water levels can rise rapidly and sweep children away.
