Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Wednesday, May 16, 2012.

Unsettled weather is expected to continue across the Eastern U.S. Wednesday. A weak trough of low pressure will remain in place, as a cold front over the Midwest moves east and south. The northern portion of this cold front is forecast to move offshore Thursday morning, while the southern portion becomes near stationary across the Southeast and lower Mississippi Valley. As a result, widely scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected across the Tennessee and Ohio Valley as well as the Eastern U.S. Wednesday and continue into Thursday morning. In particular, there is a slight risk of severe thunderstorms across parts of the Northeast. Some hail will be possible, but greater severe risk appears to be locally damaging winds. In addition, a few storms may produce locally gusty winds or small hail over the Southeast Coast in the afternoon.

Elsewhere, scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue over southeast Texas and Gulf Coast. Moreover, a few isolated rain showers and thunderstorms may pop up over the Intermountain West.

Temperature wise, another hot and dry day is in store for the Desert Southwest. Afternoon temperatures will reach 90s and low 100s. Over the Northern High Plains, temperatures are forecast to soar 15 to 20 degrees above average. Widespread upper 80s and low 90s are expected for the highs.

Severe Thunderstorm Watch
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 1:20 PM EDT on May 16, 2012

The NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a
Severe Thunderstorm Watch for portions of

       western Connecticut
       western and central Massachusetts
       western Maine
       much of New Hampshire
       eastern New York
       northeast Pennsylvania
       Vermont

Effective this Wednesday afternoon and evening from 120 PM until
900 PM EDT.

Hail to 2 inches in diameter... thunderstorm wind gusts to 70
mph... and dangerous lightning are possible in these areas.

The Severe Thunderstorm Watch area is approximately along and 110
statute miles east and west of a line from 25 miles northwest of
Newport Vermont to 20 miles south of Monticello New York. For a
complete depiction of the watch see the associated watch outline
update (wous64 kwns wou0).

Remember... a Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are
favorable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch
area. Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for
threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements
and possible warnings. Severe thunderstorms can and occasionally
do produce tornadoes.

Discussion... scattered thunderstorms are expected to intensify this
afternoon across much of eastern NY/northeast PA and western New
England as an upper trough approaches from the west. Strong daytime
heating coupled with a moist boundary layer will result in moderate
cape values and little cinh. Shear profiles are favorable for
organized/supercell storms capable of damaging winds and hail.

Aviation... a few severe thunderstorms with hail surface and aloft
to 2 inches. Extreme turbulence and surface wind gusts to 60
knots. A few cumulonimbi with maximum tops to 450. Mean storm
motion vector 26030.
